RIP Andy Griffith.
The Andy Griffith show was spun-off of Danny Thomas’ hit sit-com “Make Room For Daddy”, when Danny and his family got ensnared in a speed trap in a backwater southern town run by a wily cracker sheriff. The show was created to showcase Andy’s then-famous comedic persona as the so-dumb-I’m-smart southerner. For “The Andy Griffith Show,” he was given a son, an Aunt Bee, and a deputy, Barney Fife, played by the titanically talented Don Knotts.
Not long into the first season, Andy Griffith realized that, now at the center of the story, and with Don Knotts at his side, Sheriff Taylor was now the straight man. Instead of panicking and firing everyone and revamping the show to soothe his ego, Andy Griffith relaxed into the role and allowed Don Knotts to get all the laughs, wisely realizing that what mattered was how funny the show itself was, not just his performance.
A big man. Thanks for the great show.
